Winter Hats 2011: Crochet Dragon Hat Tutorial

Every year, around this time, I make the kids new winter hats. I’m always just a tiny bit late, because I think of it only when it starts getting cold, which is by definition too late. Hodaya’s hat is a pattern I tried last year, but the size came out wrong and ended up being too big at first, and too small later on (well, really too short). Noam’s hat is a dragon hat of my own design, based loosely on Toothless from “How to Train your Dragon”. It’s really simple and I'm willing to share what started out as a general outline and turned in to a quite detailed tutorial, of how I did it (after the jump).

We’re back from spending Simchat Tora (שמחת תורה) at my parents-in-law. The suitcase is going back up where it belongs, with a small stop as a house to my sewing box, which I was using to finally finish up a project for Noam’s kindergarten. Yes, it’s finally done (I’ve been procrastinating for a while now)!

Noam decided we should have some flowers in the sukkah. I hate don’t like flowers (they need so much care to keep them nice and fresh, it’s just not worth it) so we made some from paper.

Later, we went to visit my parents in Givaat Zeev (and we actually made it this time). I waited all day to get this picture, I remember when this used to be my view every day…

My nice, warm, fuzzy blanket which I got out last night after practically freezing to death. So, we’re not closing the windows yet, but still – one step closer to winter.

I started my day early, around 6:45 or so, but it stayed pretty dark throughout the morning. It’s actually pretty dark right now (~13:30). Well, I guess the seasons are actually changing. I dislike this time of year, because you never know what you’re going to get tomorrow, and some days you don’t know what you’re going to get later in the day. You might leave the house in the morning wearing short sleeves, and come back in the evening to pouring rain. I wish the weather could decide: summer or winter.
  

First thing in the morning, I went to the post office to get my latest delivery of fabrics, for dirt-cheap prices (from Good Sewing and Crafts). Yey! I can’t wait to start on some projects I’m planning, but I’ve been crazy busy with work, and haven’t had any time to do anything…

I thought that for day 100 I would do something special, but in fact, the pictures reflect my life and where I go each day. So I guess another day at the park with the kids is special enough.

365 Project: Day 99 in Jerusalem

I grew up in Jerusalem, and even though I don’t live there anymore, I still love it.

I met my mother for breakfast, who informed me that the Berninal sewing machine store, where I was planning to buy some supplies, had moved to a new location, which was kind of a disappointment – I expect things to stay the same when I leave for a couple of years... However, the old sewing machines add a nice touch of character to the shiny-new store.

האנטי מהפכה הפמיניסטית

לפני כמה שנים, כשיצא הספר “אני לא יודעת איך היא עושה את זה”, קראתי ביקורת צינית שתהתה “באמת איך היא עושה את זה, עם מטפלת צמודה ובעל תומך”. בטעות חשבתי שמדובר בספר קליל והומוריסטי, וחשבתי שאפנה זמן מתישהו לקרוא אותו. ובכן, פיניתי זמן וקראתי. ולא, זה לא ספר קליל והומוריסטי, זה ספר מלחיץ וקצת מדכא. בקצרה, הספר מספר על אישה (קיית) שעובדת במשרה תובענית במיוחד בתחום ההשקעות, בזמן שהמטפלת מגדלת את ילדיה, בעלה מרגיש מוזנח והיא אכולת רגשות אשמה. זהירות, ספוילר: בסוף הספר, אחרי שבעלה עזב אותה, הוא חוזר אליה, והיא מתפטרת והופכת לעקרת בית בכפר. כשצצה הזדמנות למיזם חדש, היא נכנסת מיד לדפוסי הפעולה הקודמים שלה, כולל טוטאליות מוחלטת ורגשות האשמה שנלווים אליה (לפחות, זו הפרשנות שלי לאירועים המתוארים בפרק האחרון).

מה שבלט לעיני במהלך הקריאה, היה בעיקר רגשות האשמה המייסרים של קיית. כל הזמן היא מתייסרת. כל הזמן היא מתחבטת. והיא לא עושה כלום! פשוט כלום! התחשק לי לקום ולנער אותה: או שתהיי שלמה עם הבחירות שלך, או שתשני את דרכך. בכל יום, את קמה ובוחרת מחדש מה לעשות היום. אם את רואה את זה כקונפליקט (וזה לגמרי סובייקטיבי), תחליטי מה יותר חשוב לך: להיות עם הילדים או לממש את עצמך דווקא בעבודה הזו. ההסחפות הזו אחרי בחירות שעשית מזמן, לפני שהיו לך ילדים, פשוט נראית לי ילדותית. וחבל.

דבר נוסף שצרם לי במיוחד, היה שבסוף כל פרק הייתה מן רשימת טודו (todo) עמוסה בכל מיני דברים שיש לה לעשות, כסמל לכך שהיא מלהטטת בין מיליון דברים בגלל שהיא אם עובדת. הייתי רוצה לחדש לה משהו: גם אמהות שלא עובדות (בחוץ) מלהטטות בין מיליון משימות ליום. כי על כל משימה של “ללכת לסופר לקנות עוגה ולהעביר אותה לתבנית כדי שזה ייראה כאילו אני אפיתי אותה” יש משימה מקבילה “לאפות עוגה”. ועל כל משימה של “להגיד לעוזרת שתנקה כך וכך” יש משימה של “לנקות כך וכך”. ואם להודות על האמת, רשימת משימות מסוג זה היא בעיקר סוג של אישיות, ומי שיש לה אישיות מהסוג הזה, תמצא במה להיות עסוקה כל היום, בין אם היא עובדת בחוץ ובין אם “רק” בבית (כן, גם אני כזאת. הימים החופשיים שלי הם הימים הכי עמוסים בשבוע).
