365 Project: Day 92 & 93 + שנה טובה
שלא כהרגלי, את הפוסט הזה אכתוב בעברית לכבוד ראש השנה. בניגוד לחגים יהודיים אחרים, בחג הזה אף אחד לא ניסה לחסל אותנו, ובכל זאת – אנחנו אוכלים. מכיוון שהחלטנו להשאר בבית השנה (ארבעה ימים ושלושה לילות לא בבית עם שני ילדים זה מעל לגבול היכולת שלנו), הכנו את כל-כל-כל-כל האוכל בעצמנו. טוב, כמעט את כל האוכל. באדיבות הורי בעלי קיבלנו גם גפילטע פיש וחלות תוצרת בית.
מתחילים עם מרק עוף לערב. בסירים האחרים יש פירה, אורז וצימעס. את כל זה, הכין בעלי בזמן שאני התעלפתי על הספה אתמול בערב.
היום היה תורי לבשל. התחלתי מלזניה אלפרדו - כי כמה בשר אפשר לאכול, צריך גם ארוחה קלילה.

Mini Crochet Birthday Cake Tutorial
I just thought I’d make a small something for my mother’s birthday tomorrow (well, really – in about 30 minutes). I won’t be able to see her on her birthday, but a bit of cake would be nice, right?

365 Project: Day 85, shopping fun!
I’m getting over a bout of the flu, so today I was planning to take it easy. Go get a few supplies from the yarn store, and come straight back. I ended up walking around for about 4 and a half hours, with plenty of loot to show for it.
I started out by taking advantage of the end of season sales, and bought a comfortable pair of simple black pumps. I mean, that kind of shoe is good for all seasons and extremely useful, so why pay more? I discovered that you really must be a professional photographer to take a good picture of shoes. So, no pictures (also, they’re nice, but actually quite boring, so I don’t think you’re missing anything).Then, I went to the fabric store and bought some fabric to cover my son’s bicycle, about to be left outside for the winter. I was planning to actually make the cover today, but 4 and half hours later, I still wasn’t home. So, no.
For some reason, after this, my camera decided it wasn’t going to focus any more, so this got to be the picture of the day.
It’s been getting cold at night, and I realized that winter is actually going to happen at some point (not really soon, but sometime), and it’s time to start thinking about hats for the kids. Since my stash is practically empty, after the fabric store, I went and bought some yarn. I love going to those stores, they’re so much fun. They’re all colorful and full of stuff you want to buy (but I don’t. I make a real effort to always buy only what’s on my list).
These are the yarns I chose: The dark pink yarn is for Hodaya (I haven’t picked a design yet), and the “poison green” and very dark green yarn in the back are for a dragon hat, which is what Noam requested (I promise a tutorial, when it’s ready).

365 Project: Day 81
This shadow was cast by one of those wooden human art mannequins you can set to whatever position you want. We don’t get a lot of sun in the afternoon (our apartment faces mostly east), but in the little bit of light we do get, I managed to catch this cool image.

365 Project: Day 80
I came back from the wedding two nights ago, took off my shoes and have been sick ever since. But it could almost look as if I’m a free spirit coming back from clubs in the middle of the night and leaving my shoes nonchalantly around the house.
Stuffed Toy Snake Tutorial
When we were in London, many years ago, we bought a stuffed snake. Years later, both our children love it and fight often over who gets to play with it. When my daughter went to day care, and I made her a snake to take with her. So, of course, my son wanted one too.
When I made hers, I still had a small amount of Etsuko Furuya Glasses fabric in pink (from our local fabric shop budulina), so I decided to incorporate that in the design – her snake got glasses. When I made the manly version (also with fabrics from budulina) I didn’t have any left, so I drew on plain eyes.
All the sizes given in this tutorial are appropriate for fitting a pair of glasses on the snake’s
head, but of course – you can make it any size you want!

יישוב קהילתי? לא תודה!
אתמול התפרסם כי בתום 6 שנים (!) של דיונים משפטיים, זוג ערבים יוכל להתגורר ביישוב רקפת. לצערי, מאבקם הצודק נתפס בעיני רבים מהציבור כמאבק על אפליה גזענית. בכל תביעה כזו, מטפלים נקודתית באפליה אסורה על רקע דת, גזע, מצב משפחתי, מין או נטייה מינית. בכך, נעלם מעיני רבים חוסר הצדק הבסיסי בעצם הקיום של ועדות הקבלה ליישובים קהילתיים. בועדות האלה, אין קריטריונים שקופים וברורים, אבל גם לו היו – מדובר למעשה בקבוצת אנשים, שיכולה להחליט על דעת עצמה מי זכאי לגור על אדמות מדינה. זכויות אדם בסיסיות או לא, אפליה על רקע שאינו חוקי (דת וכו’) או אפליה סתם כך, אדמות המדינה שייכות לכולנו, ואין לאף אדם או קבוצה את הזכות להחליט מי מאזרחי המדינה זכאי לרכוש אותן. כלומר, למעשה יש (ע”ע חוק ועדות הקבלה), רק שלפי כל הגיון מוסרי וצודק, לא אמור להיות.
מעבר לחוסר הצדק המהותי, לא הייתי ממליצה לאותו זוג לעבור להתגורר ברקפת. אפילו אם היישוב ייעתר לצו בית המשפט וימכור להם מגרש, הרי שהם יכולים למרר את חייהם באופן כזה שחייהם לא יהיו חיים. וזה דבר שאנשים המנסים להתקבל ליישוב קהילתי לא לוקחים בחשבון – כשנותנים לקבוצת אנשים הרבה כוח, אפילו אם יש להם שם חביב כגון “יישוב קהילתי”, זה יעלה להם לראש. כוח משחית. כשאתה בתוך הקבוצה, זה נעים ונחמד, אבל אם אתה מוצא את עצמך מחוץ לקבוצה, ולא משנה למה ואם אתה צודק או לא, זה הופך מהר מאד לגיהנום.
לפני שנים שמעתי סיפור על יישוב קהילתי שלא אנקוב בשמו, שבו היו מתנכלים לאחד מחברי היישוב. כעבור זמן מה, החליט אחד מהחברים האחרים להגן על אותו מסכן. בתגובה, החלו להתנכל גם אליו. כאשר הגיעו מים עד נפש, והוא החליט לעזוב את היישוב, ועדת הקבלה המשיכה להתנכל לו, ולא אישרה אף קונה פוטנציאלי לביתו. אינני יודעת כיצד הסיפור הסתיים בסופו של דבר (והיום אנחנו יותר מ-15 שנים אחרי), אבל בוודאי שהוא היה כרוך בהפסד כספי גדול ועוגמת נפש מרובה.

אין חדש תחת השמש, גם לא בשעון חורף
בכל שנה בתקופה זו, עם פריחת החצבים וקפצוצי הנחליאלים, אני מוצפת בבקשות לחתום על עצומה לביטול שעון החורף. השנה הגדילו לעשות ומבקשים להאריך את שעון הקיץ עד דצמבר (!לא פחות!). האחרים, ממשיכים לשלוח את העצומה של שנה שעברה, שבה מוחים על העברת שעון החורף כבר ב-12 בספטמבר. רק חבל שהשנה מעבירים שעון דווקא ב-1 באוקטובר.
ואז מתחילים עם הטיעונים והטענות למה שעון קיץ זה מ-ע-ו-ל-ה ושעון חורף הוא לא פחות מעינוי.
המתחשבים ברגשות הדתיים אומרים שממילא יום כיפור אורך 25 שעות, אז מה זה משנה אם הצום נגמר ב18:00 או ב19:00?
והם צודקים. חלקית. בערב הראשון, אין שום בעיה – זה לא משנה אם הצום נכנס בשעה 16:00 או 17:00, כי ממילא דחוסים מהסעודה המפסקת, ולא מספיקים להיות רעבים עד שהולכים לישון. אבל בערב השני – זה משנה מאד כמה זמן עבר מאז שקמת רעב בבוקר ועד שהצום נגמר. בסדר, “רק” 70% מהאוכלוסיה היהודית במדינה צמים ביום כיפור, ובט’ באב מסתדרים גם עם שעות ארוכות הרבה יותר, ניחא. נסתדר.

365 Project: Day 71
A really big pile of ginormous pancakes for dinner today.

Planner/Journal Cover Tutorial
This year, I decided that I would be organized. I’ve found that when I use online calendars, they tend to get out of sync – some things I put in my work calendar, some on my phone and I never had a full picture of what was going on. So, I bought a weekly planner (I used a coupon, so it even cost me next to nothing).
The problem was that the planner didn’t have a pocket for documents or a place for a pen. Now, that’s just not good enough! But wait – why don’t I make a cover with both features? This simple project takes less than an hour to make, and a very small amount of fabric (depending on the size of your planner).
